Subtitled Classic Tales of Supernatural Fiction in the Christian Tradition and edited by Chad Arment, this book is exactly that. Arment has taken forty-four Christian-based fantasy and horror tales from classic authors and placed them all together in a tome-sized anthology. Many of these stories were written before ‘Christian’ became a genre label, even before ‘fantasy’ became a label. Inside you will find works from such notable authors as Sir Walter Scott and Mary Wilkins. Interspersed between the tales are quotes from some of these famous authors as well as Biblical verses that relate to the stories.

This anthology sheds a historical light on the profound literary impact Christianity has had on what we call speculative fiction today. Any reader, whether Christian or not, will find this anthology a valuable addition to their collection, both for its historical education and for its entertainment value.

Whether you prefer light-hearted humor, supernatural horror, or anything in between, you’ll find enough in here to last a full evening or two -— such as Sarah Orne Jewett’s “The Gray Man” (an analogy of humankind’s conflicting feelings about death), Washington Irving’s “The Devil and Tom Walker” (where a deal with the Devil predictably yet deliciously gives greedy Tom Walker his due), and Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner in Seven Parts” (an epic poem where everything goes wrong after a luck-bearing albatross is killed).

Some readers might not be able to handle the old-fashioned and outdated ways in which many of these stories were written, but if you can handle Poe and Hawthorne, you can certainly handle these. The anthology is truly a treasure trove for writers, however, for it shows the differences in how stories were written throughout many time periods.
